Anatomy of the Albanian Ionian: Why It’s Unique

The Albanian Riviera is unlike any other coastal corridor in the Mediterranean. Steep limestone peaks of the Ceraunian Mountains plummet straight into the deep Ionian Sea, creating dramatic cliffside coves and canyon outlets that remained largely cut off from road access until recent decades.

Water clarity here regularly exceeds 20 meters, with peak summer sea surface temperatures reaching 25°C to 26°C.

Coastal Topography
The southern stretch (Sarandë to Ksamil) features soft white sand and shallow archipelago shallows, while the northern stretch (Palasë, Dhërmi, Gjipe) is characterized by smooth white pebbles and intense azure depths.

The 4 Essential Beaches to Visit

At the mouth of an 800-meter limestone canyon, Gjipe Beach is accessible only by four-wheel drive, boat, or a 25-minute hike down a red-earth trail. It is widely regarded as one of Europe’s finest natural coves, sheltered between towering canyon cliffs.

Situated directly opposite Corfu, Ksamil Beach offers calm, Caribbean-like shallows and four uninhabited islets easily reached by kayak or swim.

Dhërmi and Drymades form the cultural epicenter of the Riviera, featuring vibrant seaside tavernas, boutique beach clubs, and deep cobalt water backed by olive groves.

For complete seclusion, Plazhi i Krörezës is a pristine pebble bay south of Sarandë accessible exclusively by boat, entirely free of road noise and permanent infrastructure.

Transit Logistics: Tirana Airport vs Corfu Ferry Gateway

The fastest route to the southern Riviera is flying into Corfu International Airport (CFU), taking a quick 10-minute taxi to Corfu Port, and boarding the 30-minute express hydrofoil ferry across to the Port of Sarandë.

Alternatively, flying into Tirana International Airport (TIA) allows a scenic coastal drive south. The newly opened Llogara Tunnel bypasses the old mountain hairpin pass, dropping drivers directly into Palasë and Dhërmi in under two and a half hours.

Car Rental Routing
For local Albanian car rental, Localrent offers local fleet operators with cash deposit options and zero credit card hold requirements.

Sunbed Costs & Practical Realities

In peak July/August, sunbed pairs in popular Ksamil clubs range from €15 to €35 depending on row distance from water. In northern beaches like Borsh and Bunec, rates drop to €7–€10 per set.

Bring aquatic water shoes for pebble beaches like Dhërmi and Gjipe to ensure effortless entry.

The Best Beaches for Kids & Families in Crete

Crete is Greece's largest island and its coastline varies enormously.
