Most beach guides answer the wrong question. They give you air temperature and a photograph, when the thing that decides whether you get in the water is the water.
Sea temperature barely follows the air. It is governed by thermal inertia, depth, and currents — the Canary upwelling holds Portugal’s west coast at 18.9°C in July, while Rhodes is still 23.6°C in October, warmer than the Algarve ever gets in August. That is not something a weekly forecast can tell you; it is a seasonal shape, and it repeats.
So every temperature on Shores comes from NOAA’s Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature record (OISST v2.1), averaged across the standard 1991–2020 thirty-year baseline, with each of the 737 beaches mapped to its own coastal grid cell. It tells you the shape of the year, not tomorrow’s weather — and the shape is what you book against.
What this cannot tell you: daily conditions, wind, swell, rip currents, jellyfish blooms, or whether a beach bar is open. We do not model any of those, and we do not estimate them. Where we do not know, the page says so.
Real water temperature at the beach does not oscillate wildly based on yesterday's cloud cover; it is determined by regional bathymetry, current circulation (e.g., the Canary Current upwelling off Portugal vs. the hyper-saline Levantine Basin off Cyprus), and 30-year seasonal thermal inertia.
Every water temperature published on Shores is derived directly from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST v2.1) long-term monthly climatology across the standardized 1991–2020 30-year baseline.
Human thermal comfort in seawater does not increase linearly without ceiling — 29°C feels tropical or tepid, 25.5°C feels invigorating and optimal for prolonged bathing, and water below 19°C triggers cold-shock response.
Our default catalog sorting ("Swimming & Sea") scores beaches in the current calendar month according to an objective physical formula:

Shores scores individual beach profiles on six statutory and observable physical dimensions, heavily weighted toward untouched natural topography and statutory water purity:
Cliff height, sea caves, monoliths, and statutory conservation zoning (Natura 2000, UNESCO Biosphere, Marine Protected Areas). Penalized for high-density concrete wall developments.
Grounded in European Environment Agency (EEA) Bathing Water Directive 4-tier microbiologic monitoring, supplemented by UK EA, Turkish MoH, and Norwegian FHI data.
Official FEE Blue Flag International certification verification, seasonal certified lifeguard presence, and ocean swell sheltering.
Physical sand taxonomy: powdery white quartz, golden sand, pink crushed shell, volcanic black basalt, smooth limestone shingle, or sheer rock slabs.
Distance from nearest paved road, goat path difficulty, steep cliff stair elevation gain, or mandatory boat taxi requirements.
Estimated on-beach spend (sunbed pairs, lunch, parking, water taxis). Note: this reflects on-shore day expenses, never accommodation or hotels.
Like any rigorous atlas, our credibility rests on stating our limitations as clearly as our discoveries. There are conditions we deliberately do not invent or extrapolate:
Jellyfish swarms (e.g. Pelagia noctiluca) are erratic, wind-driven surface events lasting hours to days. We do not display live jellyfish meters because no truthful pan-European real-time sensor network exists for all coves.
Rip currents change with the hour's tide and local wave sets. While our profiles flag known hazards and swell exposure, daily red/yellow flag decisions belong exclusively to on-duty local lifeguards.
Sunbed lease contracts are auctioned yearly by municipal councils (e.g. in Greece and Italy under the EU Bolkestein Directive). Concessions shift between seasons; our budget figures represent median regional benchmarks.

Shores publishes zero AI-generated imagery or synthetic landscape mockups. What you see on a beach card is what human cameras captured in natural light.
