How NOAA Satellites Measure Sea Surface Temperature (SST)
At Shores, our sea temperature datasets derive from the NOAA Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST v2.1) data feed, combining AVHRR infrared sensors, in-situ ocean buoys, and Argo drifting floats spanning 1991 to 2020.
Unlike simple harbor thermometers which measure surface skin in stagnant shallow marinas, satellite infrared sensors measure the bulk sea surface layer across a 0.25-degree spatial grid, yielding objective climatological averages.
The Mystery of Coastal Upwelling: Why Hot Days Sometimes Mean Cold Water
One of the most surprising coastal phenomena is wind-driven upwelling. When strong offshore winds (such as the Mistral in southern France or the Tramontane in northern Spain) push the sun-warmed surface water offshore, cold, nutrient-rich deep water rises from the seabed to replace it.
Within 24 hours, a coastline experiencing 32°C air heat can see sea temperatures plummet from 24°C down to 17°C. Understanding local wind orientation is the single best predictor of daily swimming comfort.
The Swimmer’s Thermal Comfort Scale
Water temperature affects human physiology quite differently from ambient air. Below 18°C (64°F), water feels brisk and invigorating, triggering a mild cold shock response where casual swimming requires gradual acclimatization.
Temperatures between 19°C and 21°C (66°F to 70°F) provide classic refreshing conditions, typical of summer along the Atlantic coasts of Portugal and Northern Spain.
The range between 22°C and 24°C (72°F to 75°F) represents ideal bathing warmth, allowing extended swimming and snorkeling without chills.
Between 25°C and 28°C (77°F to 82°F), the sea feels tropical and balmy. This is the gold standard for effortless relaxation, typical of the Aegean, Ionian, and Levantine Seas throughout August and September.
Western vs Eastern Mediterranean Basins
The Mediterranean acts as a giant evaporation engine with a general eastward flow of water entering from the cold Atlantic at Gibraltar. As water traverses eastward across the Mediterranean basin, it steadily warms.
As a result, beaches in Rhodes, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey consistently measure 2°C to 4°C warmer than coastlines at identical latitudes in Spain or France.
